MBBS is the short form for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery : Program that imparts knowledge for students to conduct diagnoses, find treatment and medicines, and perform surgeries. It is 5.5 Years full-time undergraduate degree program in the medical and surgical field with 4.5 years of academic education followed by a 1-year compulsory internship. In standard terms, it is the first step toward becoming a doctor in India.
Students aspiring to become doctors must pass the National Eligibility cum Entrance Exam (NEET) conducted yearly by NTA. National Testing Agency has laid down specific eligibility criteria for a student to appear in NEET UG Exam. Few of these eligibility criteria: -
|Minimum Qualification ||Candidates must have a 10+2 or equivalent certification from a recognized board, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core courses. |
|Age Limit ||The candidate must be at least 17 years of age. |
|Upper Age Limit ||There is no upper age limit.|
|Qualifying Marks||NEET eligibility marks for class 12 are not aggregate marks for PCB subjects. Each category has a different class 12 percentage required for the NEET examination. |

|Number of attempts||The number of attempts is not limited to the MBBS entrance exam, i.e NEET.|
||Indian Nationals, NRIs and OCIs are eligible to apply. Foreign Nationals aspirants can also apply to study MBBS in India; for them, qualification criteria remain the same i.e. NEET.

Deemed ( Private) Medical Colleges
Government MBBS colleges are that kind of medical colleges which are governed by govt., which could be state or central govt.. Education in these colleges is provided at very subsidized rates because the Government funds these institutes, and a student has to pay nominal fees ( as compared to other types of MBBS colleges) for studying in these colleges. As per the latest data shared by the Ministry of Health Affairs, there are 321 Government medical colleges in India. Most of the top medical colleges in India are govt. medical college.
Deemed or Private colleges are privately governed medical education institutes which are now owned, governed or financially funded by govt. However, Academic fees at these institutes are considerably high compared to govt. colleges, still academic curriculum & course structure of these institutes remain exactly same as other types of govt. colleges as laid down by NMC. There are 291 private colleges in India.
Semi-Government Medical Colleges
Semi govt medical colleges are a kind of hybrid college, where govt. don’t control directly but provide some assistance, be it financial or establishment or any other type, to private colleges. These are society or trust colleges with a quota for both govt. seats and private seats. Academic fees of these colleges are higher than govt’ medical colleges and lower than private colleges.

Recently while answering a question, Union Health Minister released a detailed statement about the total number of medical seats in India. A detailed view of the state-wise total number of seats for Government as well as private colleges is given below.

The above table shows that the total number of Government MBBS seats in India is 48012 & 43915 is the total number of MBBS seats in Private colleges. Tamilnadu has the highest number of Medical seats, followed by Karnataka, Maharashtra & Uttar Pradesh.
The same report also mentioned that since the academic year 2017-18, there has been an increase of 36% in the number of medical seats, which you can see in the table below.
